Spacey initially responded with a muddled apology note in which he came out as gay (a deflection many criticized as conflating homosexuality and pedophilia) and claimed not to remember the incident. The first sexual-assault accusations against Spacey, 63, surfaced in 2017, when the actor Anthony Rapp told BuzzFeed that Spacey - who was starring in Netflix’s House of Cards at the time - had sexually assaulted him when he was 14. (A week ahead of the verdict, that number dropped to nine, thanks to a “legal technicality.”) Spacey has maintained that he “strenuously denies” all criminal allegations, telling Good Morning America last year: “I am confident I will prove my innocence.” A year after being granted unconditional bail, he appeared in London’s Southwark Crown Court on June 28, having already pleaded not guilty to all 12 charges against him. Spacey originally faced a total of seven counts of sexual assault, three counts of indecent assault, and two counts relating to nonconsensual sexual activity. jury cleared him of nine sexual-assault charges, concluding a monthlong trial in which four men testified to being preyed on by the actor.
